Poudre River Stables is home to some other very special residents ...

June 6, 2008: A young bear camps out in a tree near our house. Division of Wildlife officers responded and told us this bear had once been relocated to Cherokee Park, about 40 miles away! Winter was long in the hills this year, and this bear had learned that the grass was already green and tasty down in our river valley. Officers told us that if the youngster comes back, he will have to be killed.

Winter 2007: A bald eagle perches in the cottonwood by our arena.. The eagles disappeared about seven years ago when the utility company came through and tore down wood poles to replace them with bigger metal towers. As of February 2008, we've seen this eagle twice, and hope he returns for good. (Scroll down.)

Deer and other wildlife love to bed down near the pond.

This deer made a slight miscalculation about its ability to jump out of our pasture.

A good samaritan helped us cut the deer out of the fence

after joggers found it trapped early one Saturday.

Wildlife pose little or no threat to our domestic animals, but loose dogs are another matter.

Some residents enjoy watching the humans from safe perches.

The fox families patrol the rodent and geese population.

Underweight deer often seek refuge in the pastures until they regain their health.

One day, while attending a horse-handling seminar in Pierce,

we heard chirping. We looked all over and finally found

a nest in the neck of our trailer. Its occupant ...

... had jumped out. The baby bird spent the day in the truck bed

and rode home. When we arrived, two adult birds swooped in screaming.

The baby hopped to the rim of the truck bed, leaped,

and flew into the nearby cherry bushes.
